Mom 2.0 Summit – The Votes are In, Moms Rock

I just returned from a whirlwind conference filled with decadence, beignets and inspiration in New Orleans. As a first time speaker at the Mom 2.0 Summit, I had no idea what to expect. Very early on, it was clear that this was a well organized, completely sold out, top notch event. The caliber of women and men who gathered in the Ritz Carlton made for a well-attended event – seriously, every room was packed and it wasn’t until late in the evening when the attendees actually left the hotel. Check out this video to see a glimpse into the Mom 2.0 Summit week of events.

Disney, a filmmaker and Lois Vossen an Emmy Award-winning series producer of Independent Lens. At a high level, the keynote focused on empowering women while also looking at some of the painful realities that exist in other regions. I would provide more details but suffice to say that a summarized paragraph wouldn’t bring justice to the inspiration and amazing efforts these women have brought to the world through their work. Also, Abigail announced that her project, Women, War and Peace, The Untold Story, will air on PBS in the fall so definitely check that out. Then came the break-out sessions. Decisions, decisions, decisions… You know a conference is good when you can’t decide on which session to attend. I was the person who was bouncing from room to room so that I could attend more than one session at a time. I absolutely loved a session titled “Video, Multimedia and Monetization: How Video Can Realistically Raise your Visibility and Credibility.” I learned a great deal about original content networks from Dad Labs, MommytoMommy.Tv and HerChannel.com – there’s a little something for everyone on these sites so make sure to check them out as well. Additional highlights for the day came in the form of round-table events. I participated in a hands-on session where we answered questions using LEGOs. Very interesting exercise and fun way to brainstorm in groups. Best part, were able to take a package of LEGOs home. The other session that I found extremely interesting was a corporate blogging session with the Office.com bloggers. The best part? They have Macs at home. Insert the “they are just like us” comment here. The next day, New Balance sponsored a walk in the French Quarter as one of the afternoon options. I must say that scoring a new pair of shoes was a nice surprise. Following a day of great sessions, we ended the night at the Eiffel Society for a book reading from some of the most well-known bloggers around including TheBloggess who has us all crying from laughing so hard and the well-known Heather Armstrong, author of the Dooce blog. All in all, this event proved that Mom Bloggers are a very talented group and that brands are vying for their attention and to better understand the power of their influence. This also rang true for the final keynote panel which included media executives from Real Simple and Martha Stewart, Oprah and Babble. One thing is for sure, the way we measure influence in the past is changing and that conversations matter! Oh, and here is a link to my presentation. Note that the videos included in the presentation are examples of early videos by vloggers with very different, yet successful styles.
