Caught on Video — The Biggest Small Things

One of our customers converted dozens of old mini-DV tapes to online video with Pixorial, and wrote us to share his “a-ha!” moment (to borrow an Oprah-ism). Of all his video, one of the most precious was that of his then 4 year old son cooking in the kitchen.  As it happens, his now-grown son has turned out to be quite a chef. It was a joy for him to see the budding gourmand caught on video all those years ago. This customer experience raises the question,  “What makes great home video?” Baby’s first steps? School plays? Weddings? Sure, many of us take video of those important special occasions. However, thanks to smart phones and inexpensive video cameras that fit into the palm of your hand, it is easy to capture those small moments in life that turn out to be the biggest reflections of who we are. Case in point. I have a video that is mostly of the ground. (I didn’t realize the video camera was still on.)  In this video, where I inadvertently capture a hip-level view of fresh, white snow on a beautiful winter day, the first minute of audio reveals my daughter having a lack-of-sleep-induced temper tantrum on the ski slopes.  The second minute of audio showcases me attending to her with Dalai Lama-like patience.  I can’t proclaim to have the patience of a Nobel Peace Prize winner 24/7, but on that day I did. It was a small video moment, but a big thing for me. I hope you’ll grab your video camera and take a moment to capture your big, small things too.
